Renewable & Responsible
Summit’s commitment to environmental stewardship is at the heart of our ethos. We combine the rich heritage of traditional teak craftsmanship with an enlightened 21st century approach to eco-conscious design and production. Our dedication to excellence is reflected in every piece of furniture we create, honoring both our storied past and our commitment to building a sustainable future. Through responsible sourcing and cultivation, we are not just making the world’s finest teak furniture – we are shaping a legacy that will last for generations.
CHAMPIONS OF SUSTAINABILITY
In addition to being a globally renowned leader in the design, manufacturing, and distribution of exceptional teak furniture, Summit has also played a leading role in support of sustainable tree-farming practices throughout Southeast Asia.
Our commitment to sustainable teak production is part of our history and founding ethos. Early efforts to guarantee that our teak supply was properly sourced and protected compelled us to move our operations to Indonesia in the 1980s. Once there, closely monitored harvest and production methods and a responsive government ensured that we could generate teak production in a way that secured our supply, protected the health of the environment, and contributed positively to the local economy.
Summit Furniture is proud to be fully certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), which ensures that the Indonesian teak we source is grown in a secure, carefully managed, and environmentally responsible manner.
RISING TO GREATNESS
Premium Grade A Indonesian teak is sourced from the teakwood tree (Tectona grandis) and cultivated in government-managed forests on the island of Java. A cherished national resource, Indonesian teak is exceptionally strong, highly prized for use in specialty ship-building and construction, as well as the creation of heirloom furniture.
We use only premium Grade A heartwood found in the “heart” or the center of the log. Heartwood teak is a rich golden hue and a virtually blemish-free grain. It is almost immune to decay and its oils make it naturally resistant to insects. The appeal of the wood is matched by the stature of the teakwood tree itself—taking an epic 30 to 50 years to mature and towering to a height of more than 500 feet.
FUTURE FOCUSED
Because of its long growth cycle, mature teak is exceptionally valuable. The government of Indonesia is heavily invested in protecting the trees from theft, so tree farms are monitored and the trees themselves carry a documented history from the time they are saplings through maturity and harvest. This ensures the security of the supply for businesses and communities that rely on it.
Cultivation acreage is limited, so enhancing the productivity and quality of product from current tree farms is key to safeguarding future sources of supply. For every tree that is harvested, two or more are planted in its place, beginning the generational growth cycle once again.
For 45 years, Summit Furniture has committed itself to bringing the world beautiful furniture—responsibly. We continue to be inspired by the promise of a world safeguarding the environment, protecting renewable resources, and creating products that carry our name forward into the future.
